We ended up going to Santa Rosa Island and it was fabulous! Like you mentioned Island Packers runs a great operation and it was an awesome adventure. I had so much fun I wrote a blog post about the boat ride. Thanks for your insight and we may have to try Santa Cruz another time! 🙂

That is SO cool!!! I’m so happy you made it out there. You did motor right past my boat on the way out and in… I read your blog post last night – sorry you had a rough passage on the way out – it has been consistently windy here for weeks! UGH – sick of it. But you made it and sounds like you had a great time! 🙂

Awesome! So we passed right by you! 🙂 I had no idea what to expect in terms of the wind…thought it was the norm, but luckily I think looking at the horizon and being spoiled by the wildlife kept me going :). We had a wonderful time and I’m happy we got to enjoy Santa Rosa. Just uploaded all my photos today and had to pick and choose carefully for my write up…so many beautiful views of the island..made me want to go back 🙂

Wonderful post and love the video! I have been seriously considering a trip to the Santa Rosa Island especially for the pristine beach and perhaps the Torrey Pine hike. My question…some say the boat ride takes 3 hours, some more. How long was your trip? What might cause the variation in timing? Also, I’ve read there is one restroom…do you know if it’s a flushable toilet? Practical concerns of course! 🙂 I haven’t been on a boat in awhile, but I’ll be taking some dramamine…and my kids will too. It’ll be their first adventure on a boat! Thanks so much! 🙂

Hi! Santa Rosa is beautiful! The beach is gorgeous and we have been up to the Torrey Pines once or twice. On Island Packers on a smooth day, maybe 2+ hours – if a windy day it could be 2.5 to 3. They usually go up the backside of Santa Cruz so you are out of the channel and in the lee of Santa Cruz. Just depends on weather and what kind of leftover slop or seas are out there. We have been to the island several times on our own boat so have enjoyed the entire beach. On Island Packers they have two flushable toilets and honestly, I cannot remember having to use a toilet when on the island… generally on our own boat we use our own toilet. Maybe start with a day trip to Santa Cruz to see how the kids do – it’s a shorter trip to Scorpion and it’s beautiful there as well – the beach isn’t the same, but still a great place! Let me know how it goes!! Island Packers runs a great operation!

Thank you SO much for your reply. Getting to an island at the Channel Island NP has been on my bucket list and I am so excited about this adventure! I am also considering Santa Cruz but I am enamored with the turquoise beach at Santa Rosa and the slot canyon there (or so I’ve heard), if it’s an extra hour, it might be worth it. I do wonder if we can manage the boat ride, especially if it’s windy. Plus if there’s even a chance that we can see the painted cave on the trip back, that would make my day. I always wanted to kayak through that cave but I can’t take the kids so this would be a marvelous way that everyone could see the cave. It’ll be fun planning this out but I’m in between the two islands now. And it’ll be one tough decision…eventually we’ll go to both, but for now and our first adventure, I almost want to pack it all in :0 I know my kids love the beach and exploring it….we do so much hiking they might not want to do much of that on the island! But I know there’s a visitor center at Santa Cruz. What short/shaded hike might you recommend there?

Island Packers runs a 100% totally class operation! They also run to Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands. I will have a day trip to Santa Cruz Island up within a few weeks. Let me know if you will be planning a trip and I will let my friend at Island Packers know. Thanks for watching and reading!
